Lesson Planning
Bloom's Taxonomy
Website article: https://www.fitnyc.edu/files/pdfs/CET_TL_BloomsTaxonomy.pdf
Rationale: I selected this article because I believe the 3 domains: affective, cognitive and psychomotor is important to learning. By using Blooms Taxonomy I can evoke my learner’s emotions to change their attitude or beliefs on the topic. By reflecting critically, examining and evaluating the information the learners will gain a deeper understanding of the topic. This will create the aptitude to remember and recall the information. Getting my learners to use their emotions, think critically and ultimately transfer their knowledge whether written or physical will lead to a successful learning outcome.
Creating a positive learning environment
Web Article: https://reflectionedu.wordpress.com/2012/05/09/positive-learning-environment-developing-strategies/
Rationale: I selected this article because it resonates my feelings on being positive. I believe in building a good rapport, showing empathy, understanding and actively engaging my learners. The strategies I learned from this article includes setting ground rules from the onset, knowing learners expectations and giving them a sense of responsibility to accomplish their expectations. Providing interesting lessons using a variety of instructional techniques. Allowing adult learners to draw on their life experiences is a useful teaching technique to create a platform for discussions. Avoid being critical; provide praise when warranted and constructive feedback for better understanding.
Instructional Process/Strategies
Web article: http://hlwiki.slais.ubc.ca/index.php/BOPPPS_Model
Rationale: I chose this article because I like the structured nature of the BOPPPS instructional process. Using this method I can design and deliver my lesson in an organized manner. I like the fact that it uses an attention grabbing start, builds on the learner’s previous knowledge and there is a distinct learning objective. It encourages active participation using various learning techniques. The post assessment is critical to determine whether the learner met the objective. The summary will be an opportune time to wrap up and reinforce critical components of the lesson and close the lesson appropriately.
Motivational Techniques
Web article: http://theelearningcoach.com/elearning_design/isd/30-ways-to-motivate-adult-learners/
Rationale: Successful learning outcomes are dependent on how motivated the learners are. Not all learners attend a class on their own volition therefore as an adult educator it will be my responsibility to keep my learners engaged and motivated. Some of the interesting techniques I found useful during my research include creating relevancy, interesting ice-breakers, games, add a competitive edge, use auditory, visual and kinesthetic learning styles, be perceptive enough to realize when interest is waning and change strategy. Provide learners with videos, podcasts and web articles to encourage exploration. Provide constructive feedback and ask for feedback to improve your instruction.
Media (possible considerations)
Web article: http://www-07.ibm.com/services/pdf/blended_learning.pdf
Rationale: I selected this article because with blended learning there is a compulsory need to utilize media for a successful learning outcome. Instructional technology (web based) and traditional classes work harmoniously to gently ease learners into the 21st century style of self-directed learning. Ways in which media is used for lesson planning include online lectures, online assessments and tests. The ability to access experts via virtual classrooms is a value add to the learner. Podcasts, research, reflective journals, blogs and sharing information on Facebook and Twitter are taking blended learning lessons to new heights.

Selected Quote:
“There are few educators who would disagree with the principle that lifelong learning is a good thing but the important questions are about the types of learning that the concept promotes, the life that it encourages us to lead, who benefits from this and the nature of the society that it upholds.”
Objective:
We often do not stop to think how do we actually know so much about what we do? It takes a quote such as this to catch your attention and make you realize “Hey Presto” I have been doing lifelong learning forever. Lifelong learning is beneficial on so many levels. It makes us marketable for better employment prospects, personal development, active citizenship and social cohesion.
I can understand some educators may disagree with the principle that lifelong learning is good; they may be of the opinion that learning should only be via institute provided formal education; but they should view this as an opportunity to expand their activities and collaborate with key partners to cater to the needs of their customers. For me learning is endless be it job specific training, performance appraisal feedback, internships, search engines to “wiki how” or even product manuals. Whatever the type of learning formal, non-formal or informal, the outcomes can only be a positive and a benefit for you, the organization you work for, the economy and ultimately society.
Reflective:
The authoritarian method of teaching is not conducive to achieving the desired outcomes. The learner’s focus shifts from imbibing and retaining the knowledge to “I have to do what is required to pass”. There are various methods and approaches to learning that is more suitable to achieve the desired outcomes from learners. One such example is Learnerships or “on the job training.” My experience at KPMG as a Graduate Recruitment Specialist bringing in thousands of new Accounting graduates each year to complete their training and Final Qualifying examinations to become Chartered Accountants. In this environment they are able to observe firsthand how to their theory ties in to the actual work and how to transfer their theoretical knowledge, it not only teaches them how to do their chosen field of work but provides them with the necessary soft skills such as professionalism, good work ethics and client liaison. Upon completion of three years training and passing two stringent formal examinations, they are highly marketable professionals in a global market.
I realized teaching should be viewed holistically and not boxed into types. Above is a perfect example of how formal education in collaboration with business and industry provided training can prepare and provide a learner with invaluable experience and better equip them to function in our society.
Interpretive
My `Aha’ moment is “this is me” I am a classic example, I am an adult learner who chose to continue my education at a later age. Though I am doing this through a formal institution I am sitting in the comfort of my home, doing research on my assignments with access to volumes of information at my fingertips and teaching assistance at the touch of a button. My educator has chosen this type of learning concept to work with me and not the standard authoritarian classroom style. This quote changed my mind about being taught as an adult and how adult educators are utilizing advancing technology as a means to provide learners like myself the opportunity to access quality global education. My key insight is in this age of fast paced advancing technology we need to keep updated with ever changing information. We have had to learn about internet banking to electronic tablets, distance learning, new mobile phones and now all types of applications that are being created and developed everyday to make our lives simpler. It is up to us to learn how to use these applications to fully benefit from this amazing world of technology.
Decisional
Upon reflecting on this quote of Lifelong learning and the types of learning the concept promotes I have come to realize I prefer to teach in a facilitator or activity style. I myself did not enjoy the traditional classroom style of learning. I have since had a few opportunities to learn with the Facilitator style and it is my preferred choice of study method. I enjoy the interactive nature of this teaching style just as much as I derive satisfaction from the self learning aspect which allows me to think critically about the topics thus increasing my retention of knowledge. I have been fortunate to have facilitated in my line of work and found the outcomes achieved with this method was in line with the desired results.
